Syllabus of Int. Opera Studio of Municipal and Regional Theater of Patras (OSP) - Short Version
from August 5th 2015
Despite being a creation of the Florentinian musicians during the late 16th century, the operatic genre was born out of the study of the Ancient Greek literature, which led to the pursuit of the lost unity between music and speech. The contribution of Ancient Greeks, as well as the Byzantines together with the flourishing of the liturgical drama by the west European monks, is proven to be priceless for the birth of the opera.
The current Municipal and Regional Theater "Apollo" in Patras, was built in 1871 based on the architectural designs of the Greek-Austrian architect Ernst Moritz Theodor Ziller. As an Opera House it first received its inauguration with the Greek premier of Verdi's "un ballo in maschera". Consequently, as one may say, the establishment of this building is closely related to the European opera. The OSP of the Municipal Theater in Patras continues and revives this correlation offering public wide access to the musical theatre.
The Opera Studio of Patras (OSP) is a novel and innovative institution for the data of Municipal Theaters in Greece. As a department of the Municipal and Regional Theater of Patras (MRTP), the Opera Studio is open to young male and female classical singers of every nationality and enables talented artists to prepare and develop their skills for the profession of the Opera/ Classical Theater singer. MRTP as operator of the OSP, is thereby a pilot and innovative cultural model for Municipal Theaters in Greece.
Young artists who have already successfully completed their studies in monody, can in this way by attending a specialized program of courses, seminars and projects in the field of Opera/Musical Theater prepare professionally for their performances in professional productions on the operatic scene. For a lyric singer who aspires to pursuit today a carrier in the field of Opera and Musical Theater, just having a good voice is not enough. Opera and Musical Theater in general, means both singing and theatrical stage presentation at the same time.
OSP's goal is the excellent training in both fields: to improve and consolidate students' vocal abilities and to perfect their stage presence during their participation in a musical, theatrical play (opera, operetta, musicals). In other words, OSP's goal is to create "Acting Singers" who will be able to cope with the demands of Musical Theater and therefore will be ensured professional success and recognition.
The vision that motivates the functioning and development of the OSP is on the one hand, the creation of a new concept for the Opera in Greece and on the other hand the (re)foundation of Opera in Patras. For the realization of this vision a spirit of cooperation and creative thinking in various levels is required both short-term and long-term.
1. Short – term: Operation and development of the OSP under the Municipal and Regional Theater of Patras (MRTP).
2. Medium – term: Collaborations at national level with the existing ' Opera Studio' of Greek National Opera in Athens.
3. Long – term: Collaborations at European level with similar 'Opera studios' as those of Germany and Italy.
4. Productions of musical theater performances.
5. (Re)founding Opera in Patras as a department of MRTP.
This new concept will hopefully make up a future model about the 21st century musical theater in Greece.
The third millennium in which we are living, offers opportunities to make visions a reality. In a society which is culturally and economically situated in a radical reshaping, proves the OSP of the MRTP to be a tested instrument which will contribute effectively and creatively to this reform.
